Kannur was earlier known as Cannanore and is a leading city cum Municipal Corporation in Kerala. It is also the administrative headquarters of the District of Kannur while lying 274 km away from the city of Kochi. Kannur is also 137 km away from Mangalore. Kannur Cantonment was the sole Cantonment Board in Kerala State. The Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala is the largest in Asia. The Muzhappilangad Beach is also the longest such drive-in beach in all of Asia. The area is governed by the Kannur Municipal Corporation while the total area covered is 78.35 square kilometers. The population of the area stood at 232,486 people as of the year 2011. The languages spoken here include English and Malayalam. The coordinates of Kannur are 11.8689°N 75.3555°E.
