Sonipat is a municipal corporation, and the district headquarter in the state of Haryana. It is under the national capital region, just 44km from New Delhi. It is located 214km southwest of Chandigarh. The Yamuna River is on the eastern boundary. The district has a total area of 2260 square kilometres. English is the dominant speaking language of the state.

Sonipat Junction railway station is the central station. It is located on the Delhi-Kalka line. It is on Delhi Western Peripheral Expressway, Grand Trunk Road (NH 44), and Eastern Peripheral Expressway (NE II). The railway station of the district passes through State Highway No. 20.
The road ministry of the state proposed a bus port in the airport route on GT road sector, Sonipat. It will be constructed as a modern bus airport, with facilities similar to an international airport.
