Ariyalur is the district headquarter of Ariyalur District in Tamil Nadu, India. It was once a part of the Trichirapally District before India's independence in 1947, a part of Tiruchirappalli District until 1995, and Perambalur District until 2007, and later formed a new District. The town spreads over an area of 1,949 sq. km over the coordinates of 11°8'14"N and 79°4'40"E and has an elevation of 76 m above sea level. Ariyalur experiences a hot semi-arid climate. As the town lies in the rain shadow area of the western ghats, it receives minimal rainfall during the Southwest monsoon. The estimated population of the town is 28,902. Tamil is an official language here.

Ariyalur municipality is a second-grade municipality that administers the town. Some of the famous places in the town are Arulmigu Peruvudaiyar Temple, Brihadisvara Temple, Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary, and others.
Thanjavur (38 km), Tiruchirapalli (56 km), and Pondicherry (118 km) are some of the major cities near Aryalur. The National Highway 136 passes through Aryalur, connecting Perambalur and Thanjavur. Other major roads passing the town are the State Highways 143 connecting Ariyalur- Thungapuram-Thittakudi, and SH139 connecting Ariyalur-Rettipalayan. The town is well connected by bus service under the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation. Chennai and Trichy are the nearest railway stations in the town. Ariyalur railway station is the major railway station connecting Chennai and Tiruchirapalli. Karaikal port and Tiruchirapalli international airport are closest to Ariyalur.
Some educational institutions in and near the town are Modern College of Education, KKC College of Engineering and Technology, Vinayaga Education College, and others. The town is rich in limestone and is surrounded by seven cement factories and two sugar factories. The major profession here is agriculture due to a large part of the fertile Cauvery delta found in the town. Some of the big industrial houses in Ariyalur are Birla, India cement, Dalmia cement and Madras cement. Also, the state government's TANCEM factory is in Ariyalur.
