Ranchi is the capital state of Jharkhand, and it is divided into Bundu and Ranchi as its subdivisions. Ranchi had been affected due to the Jharkhand movement when it demanded a separate state for the tribals. It is one of the oldest cities of Jharkhand that has been selected among hundred cities and is considered a smart city under Narendra Modi's smart city program.
The city is at 23°22′N 85°20′E towards the Tropic of Cancer and spreads over an area of 175 square metres, with an elevation of 651 metres. The city is towards the Chota Nagpur Plateau. The state has a 1,073,427 population, with 52.1% of males and 47.9% of females.
Each subdivision of the state has 18 blocks, 1311 villages, 305-gram panchayats, and the subdivision have 4 blocks.
Hindi is commonly the trade language in Ranchi. Nagpuri is the regional language of Ranchi. The tribal language Mundari is mainly the language of the Munda tribe.

The Ranchi Railway Station enables easy connectivity with major cities. It has train services to Rourkela, Jaipur, Amritsar, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Pune, Nagpur, Raipur, Cuttack, Durg, Ajmer, Jammu, Surat, and others.
Ranchi has its domestic airport, Birsa Munda Airport, which is at Hinoo, 7km from the city's centre. It is well connected through roads, where NH 23 and NH 33 pass through Ranchi.
