Among the many land measurement units locally used in India is biswa. Most commonly used in northern states of UP, Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Himachal, biswa is often used along with the bigha to signify shorter land units. These two units are typically used to measure agricultural land in rural parts of these states. Typically, 4-6 bighas of land would make up for an acre of land.
A biswa is actually the twentieth part of a bigha. However, the value keeps differing considering the specific part of the state where the measurement is being applied. In eastern part of Uttar Pradesh, for example, 20 biswa is equal to 1 pucca bigha while 10 biswa is equal to 1 kucha bigha. Depending on the state where it is used, one biswa could stand for 50 to 150 square yard. There is 27,225 square foot in 20 biswas.
