Bardhaman or Burdwan is a leading city cum municipality in West Bengal and the headquarters for the Purba Bardhaman District. It became the capital of the district at the time of the rule of the British. Burdwan has a rich history going back to 5000 BC and the origin of the name may go back to the 6th century BCE. It may be inspired by Vardhaman Swami or Mahavira. The Bardhaman Municipality governs the area and the total area is 26.30 square kilometers. The population stood at 347,016 as of the 2011 Census. The official languages spoken here include Bengali and English. Burdwan has a plethora of tourist attractions including the Tombs of Qutbuddin Khan Koka and Sher Afghan along with the Curzon Gate, Rajbari, Sarbamangala Temple, Golapbag, Kamalakanta Kalibari and 108 Shiva Temple Complex.
