The Nilgiris district is among the 38 districts of Tamil Nadu. Its name comes from the range of mountains that are spread across the borders of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Its coordinates are 11.4°N 76.7°E, and is spread over an area of 2565 square kilometers. The official languages of this district are Tamil, Badaga, Kannada and Malayalam. According to the 2011 census, Nilgiris district had a population of 735,394. This district experiences a much cooler and wetter climate.

The Nagapattinam–Gudalur National Highway passes through the Nilgiris district. The Nilgiri Ghat Roads connect the Nilgiris with nearby cities in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. The central bus stand for the district is the Ooty bus stand along with the municipal bus stand Coonoor. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway from Mettupalayam to Udhagamandalam via Coonoor, is one the best tourist attraction. It serves some of the most populated areas of the Nilgiris like Wellington, Coonoor, Ketti, Lovedale, Aruvankadu, and Ooty. As there are no airport or seaport in this district, one can find the nearest airport at Coimbatore.
There are one district headquarters government hospital, 38 primary health centres, five taluk hospitals, 194 health sub-centres, and five plague circles in the district. Some of the best educational institutions in the Nilgiris include The Lawrence School, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Shree Sarasswathi Vidhyaah Mandheer, St. Jude's Public School & Junior College, Good Shepherd International School etc. Philomena shopping mall, Lower Bazaar Road, Charring Cross, Ooty Municipal Market, Tibetan Market are some of the best places that serves as a shopping centre. The major manufacturing companies or industries include, Wallwood Plantations and Agency Limited, Ooty Farmers Producer Company Limited, Nethra Crop Sciences Private Limited etc.
