Ramgarh is among the 24 districts of Jharkhand. It used to be the military district during the British regime, also known as the Ramgahr district. The district name means ‘The Fort of God Ram.’ Spread over 1,360.08 square kilometres, it has 9,49,443 population speaking Khortha and Hindi. There are 364 villages, and a total of 494230 males and 455213 females. This district has been carved from the Hazaribagh district and lies at the centre of Jharkhand. The district got its name from the town Ramgarh which is the present headquarter of the place.
The district borders of the city have Ranchi towards the south, Purulia towards the east, Bokaro towards the north and east, and Hazaribagh towards the northwest. This district has six blocks, one subdivision, 125-gram panchayats, and 361 villages.

At Ramgarh, the railway network runs through the southeastern Railway and East Central Railways. However, Barkakana junction is the only railway junction in this state. The district Cantonment railway station is just 1 km from its bus stand and is situated on NH33.
The roads are the major source of transportation, and one has to take it through NH23, NH 33, and SH -2. The NH 23 connects with NH 33 at the Mahatma Gandhi Chowk, near Ramgarh Cantonment. The Birsa Munda Airport at Ranchi is its nearest option. There are direct flights from here to travel to cities like Mumbai, Patna, Kolkata, and Delhi.
