Versova was originally called Vesave and is part of north-western old Mumbai city. It is an upmarket neighbourhood which used to be a fishing village. The original name was Visava which means “rest” in Marathi. The fishing community called the Kolis resides at one end of the beach. The neighbourhood is famous for the Versova Fort and the beach. Recently, a massive clean-up of Versova beach was done which has made it the largest ever clean-up of a beach. The beach measures almost 28 acres and the size of the sub locality is 2.97 square kilometres with a tropical wet and dry climate. Versova has an estimated population of 63661 with coordinates of 19°7'60N 72°47'60E. Marathi, Hindi, and English are widely spoken.
